About Sagasu Running

Launched in February 2023 by professional product designer and longtime runner Chris Stepanek, Sagasu Running is an independent media platform dedicated to the technical engineering, product innovation, and design philosophy behind high-performance footwear and running gear.

The platform derives its name from the Japanese word Sagasu (探す)—meaning "to search or seek." This concept shapes my entire operational thesis. Rather than regurgitating marketing copy or rushed PR claims, Sagasu Running applies an uncompromising, analytical lens to the running industry and product, evaluating equipment at the intersection of structural engineering, design language and real-world performance.

Engineering over hype

What began as a specialized digital project has quickly evolved into a highly engaged global community of over 28,000 runners, running shoe design enthusiasts, and industry insiders who value design-driven insight over superficial takes.

In fact, Sagasu Running rejects reactionary "hot-takes" and surface-level overviews. Instead, my content prioritizes real-world testing, engineering breakdowns, and objective design criticism. I examine how products behave under stress, where specific footwear models fit within broader market strategies, and how design choices impact the biomechanics of runners everywhere.

Every production asset is developed with zero marketing scripts, zero outside editorial influence, and zero compromise.

A designer’s perspective

I look at running equipment differently because my technical background demands it. With a decades-long career in industrial, digital, and physical product design, I don’t just evaluate how a running shoe feels on the road. Instead, I analyze why it behaves that way based on its manufacturing construction, foam compounds, and tooling geometry, as well as looking at overall product design strategy for the brand and marketplace.

This specialized dual perspective allows me to strip away marketing jargon and deconstruct the genuine engineering under your feet. Whether producing in-depth reviews, long-form editorial essays, or live streaming running shoe coverage and community Q&A on the podcast, my mission is to equip runners with the objective truth about the equipment they run in.

Editorial pillars

  • Curated Focus: I only analyze products that present genuine technical innovation or compelling design architecture. By refusing to chase fleeting industry hype, my coverage remains strictly focused on equipment that delivers authentic engineering value to the end user. At the end of the day, Sagasu Running is the curated focus of a single independent observer.

  • Independent Authority: Sagasu Running operates under a strict, non-negotiable policy of no paid reviews. I accept products from running brands exclusively for independent testing. No brand can purchase a positive review, preview review content before publication, or alter my editorial conclusions.

  • Technical Depth: My analysis focuses intensely on design strategy, materials science, structural geometry, and product longevity. I treat running gear as functional equipment, evaluating it through the rigorous standards of modern product design and real-world use-cases.

  • Community Integration: Sagasu Running is a bidirectional conversation. My production pipeline, testing criteria, and analytical queries are directly shaped by the technical questions, performance needs, and real-world data shared by my global audience.
